According to the 1% and 99% percentile definition of extreme drought (precipitation) index, five drought stress gradients were determined (70% increase in rainfall, 35% increase in rainfall, control, 35% decrease in rainfall, and 70% decrease in rainfall). By artificially creating a rainfall gradient through a canopy, the precipitation intercepted by the canopy is increased to the corresponding rainfall increasing sample plot through a gravity gravity gravity drip irrigation system. Using a moisture sensor (5TM, Decagon Devices, Inc.) to continuously monitor soil moisture in tamarisk forests under different drought stresses.
